    Aubrieta × cultorum

Low perennial ground cover with bright small flowers and evergreen foliage: ideal for rocky lawns, retaining walls, borders and balcony planters with good drainage. Loves the sun and dry summer air; Tolerates light partial shade, but blooms less in dense shade. Does not tolerate stagnation of moisture at the roots. After a wave of flowering, the bush is trimmed - this way the carpet remains dense and neat.

    How to care

    Watering

Watering is moderate: the soil is slightly moist, without stagnation; after thawing, remove excess moisture from the supports.

    💡Tips
    • Remove dense snow crust from the borders if it lies on the carpet for a long time - the sheet may rot.
    • Loose pebble mulch controls weeds and reflects light.

    Soil preparation

    pH
    Soil acidity
6.5–7.5 (slightly alkaline soil is often better than highly acidic soil)
    Soil type
Very well drained loamy, Rocky with organic matter, Sandy with compost, Mix for rock garden

    Planting parameters

    📏Distance between plants
25–40 cm between grown thickets (depending on the variety; leave room for the spreading carpet)
    ⬇️Planting depth
Planted at the same depth: root collar without deepening; drainage in container ¼ height
    🌱Planting methods
Seedlings from seeds (II–III), Purchased seedlings, Cuttings in spring/early summer, Dividing a bush in spring or autumn

    💡Preparation Tips

    • Dig the bed to a depth of 25-30 cm
    • Add compost or humus (5-10 kg per m²)
    • If necessary, adjust pH with lime or peat

    Frequently asked questions(3)

Often the age of the bush (needs division), lack of light or excess nitrogen and moisture. After flowering, trim and divide if necessary in autumn or spring.

Typical sign of flooding, ice without snow or damping off under dense snow/mulch. Improve drainage, do not bury the root collar, and ventilate the mulch in the spring.

Yes, but the seedlings are small and weed competition knocks them down; easier with seedlings II–III for moisture control or purchased delicate seedlings.

    Role in the garden

Honey plant and bright early accent for pollinators; spreads along cracks, visually softens stone and containers. Not a food crop.

*For reference: the plant is grown primarily as an ornamental.
