Frequently asked questions(5)
Early varieties are sown in April–May for summer harvest. Summer sowings (June–July) give harvest by autumn. Beans are cold-hardy and tolerate slight frosts (down to -5°C), so can be sown at soil temperature +8–10°C.
Pinching (removing upper 10-15 cm shoots) during flowering protects from black aphids that cluster on tips. It also redirects nutrients to developing pods.
Most garden bean varieties grow to 60-80 cm and may need support in open, windy locations. Simple stakes or low mesh work well.
Young pods are harvested at 60-70 days at 10-15 cm size (milk stage). For storage, wait for full maturity when pods dry and beans harden — this takes 100-120 days.
Fresh pods keep in fridge for 3-5 days. Properly dried mature beans stored in cool, dry place can last 6-12 months.
