Samson carrot seeds are sown directly into the ground from April to June, when soil warms to 8–10°C. In the middle climate zone this is late April to May. You can make several sowings (April, May, and early June) to extend the fresh harvest period.
At the early stage (seedlings) water daily or every other day to keep soil evenly moist. During root development (June to August) water 2–3 times per week, daily in hot weather. Avoid abrupt moisture fluctuations — this causes root cracking.
The Samson variety matures in 70–90 days. With April sowing harvest is ready in July–August, with May sowing in August–September. Harvest when roots reach 3–4 cm diameter and become firm and sweet.
A distinctive feature of this variety is excellent storage life. Trim tops to 1 cm, dry carrots for 2–3 days in a dry room, then layer in boxes separated by moist sand or sawdust. Store in a basement, root cellar, or refrigerator at 0–2°C with 90–95% humidity. With proper storage can last 6–8 months.
Yes, thinning is essential. When 2–3 leaves appear (2–3 weeks after sowing), thin for the first time to 3–4 cm spacing, removing weaker plants. Once carrots are established (5–6 leaves), do a second thinning to 5–7 cm. Without this, roots will be small and misshapen.
