Seeds can be stratified in fall and sown in early spring (March-April). Seedlings are planted in ground in May after frost danger passes. Propagate by division in spring or fall.
Echinacea is undemanding and grows in loam, sandy loam, and sandy soil. Good drainage is essential — it cannot tolerate waterlogging. Optimal pH is 6.0-7.5. Soil improvement with compost promotes better growth.
During flowering, water 1-2 times per week depending on weather. Mature plants are drought-tolerant and with mulch require less frequent watering. Monitor soil moisture during heat.
Deadheading stimulates new flower production and extends blooming period. However, leave some flowers for seed collection and to feed pollinators.
Echinacea is hardy to -30°C. Cut stems to ground level in fall and add mulch layer (compost, peat) 5-7 cm thick. In severe winters, protect first-year plants with additional covering.
