Frequently asked questions(5)
Plant fir in early spring (March-April) or fall (September-October). Choose a location with full sun or light partial shade. The hole should be 1.5 times larger than the root ball. Plant at the same depth as in the nursery. Fill the hole with loose soil, compact and water abundantly. Mulch the root circle with peat or bark.
In the first year water 2-3 times per week, keeping the top 10 cm of soil moist. After rooting (2-3 years) water 1-2 times per week depending on weather. In hot periods mist the foliage in the morning. Fir prefers moderate moisture and tolerates poor dry conditions and waterlogging.
At planting apply compost or manure to the bottom of the hole. In late May fertilize with a complex fertilizer for conifers (NPK 10-8-15). In July-August apply potassium-phosphorus fertilizer (0-10-20) for strengthening. Avoid excess nitrogen which promotes soft growth and winter damage.
Fir naturally grows with a conical crown and requires minimal pruning. Remove only dead, damaged or crossing branches in late winter – early spring (February-March). For young trees slightly shorten the top if it bifurcates. Prune with sharp tools, avoiding large stubs.
Fir is frost hardy and overwinters well in temperate climates (down to -40°). Young trees (up to 3-4 years) should preferably be mulched with 15 cm of peat or leaves. In regions with heavy snowfall bind young tree branches with protective material. In spring remove snow from branches if it presses them. Shading in the first year will help avoid sunscald of the needles.
