During fruit ripening (June-August) water weekly in dry weather. Young bushes need more frequent watering. Adult plants are drought and frost tolerant.
In spring apply nitrogen fertilizers (ammonium nitrate), during flowering and fruiting apply phosphate-potassium fertilizers (superphosphate, potash). Every 2-3 years apply manure.
Perform formative pruning in spring, removing weak, diseased, and crossing branches. Remove old branches gradually. The bush should be airy with 5-8 main stems.
Hazelnut tolerates frosts well down to -25°C. Young first-year seedlings are mulched with peat or leaves. Adult bushes do not need protection, but sanitary pruning is done in spring.
