Frequently asked questions(8)
Leaf mustard is planted in open ground in April–August. Optimum temperature for growth: Cool weather; shoots quickly in hot weather. Sowing depth: 1 cm. Distance between plants: 3–4 cm in a row (after thinning), 10–12 cm between rows.
Leaf mustard requires regular watering, especially during the period of active growth and expansion of green mass. Water with warm water at the root, avoiding getting on the leaves. Lighting conditions: sun (spring/autumn). In hot weather, watering is increased; in cool weather, watering is reduced. Mulching helps retain moisture in the soil.
Leaf mustard grows best in fertile soils fertilized with humus. Optimal acidity (pH): Any cultivated. Before planting, it is recommended to add compost or humus. Planting pattern: 3–4 cm in a row (after thinning), 10–12 cm between rows. Good drainage is important to prevent water stagnation.
Leaf mustard grows well next to: peas, beans, grapes, fruit trees. Undesirable neighbors: turnips, white cabbage. These plants may inhibit growth or attract common pests. Proper proximity helps protect against pests and improve yields.
Leaf mustard is harvested in May–September. Greens are cut off as they grow, preventing flowering. Do not overexpose the crop in the garden - this reduces the overall yield and quality.
Leaf mustard is an unpretentious crop suitable for beginning gardeners. It does not require complex care and tolerates minor mistakes in agricultural technology.
The main problems when growing leaf mustard: fungal diseases (powdery mildew, late blight), aphids, spider mites. For prevention, observe crop rotation (do not plant leaf mustard in one place for 2 years in a row), provide good ventilation, and water at the root. At the first signs of illness, use biological products (Fitosporin, Trichodermin).
Mustard leaves can be dried, frozen, or used to make relishes. To dry, cut the shoots, tie them into bunches and hang them in a dark, ventilated place. To freeze, chop the greens and place in bags or ice cube trays. Dried and frozen greens retain their flavor for up to 12 months.
