Frequently asked questions(5)
Seeds are sown in late March — early April for seedlings in peat pots. Temperature for germination should be 25–28°C. Seedlings are planted in open ground in late May — early June, when soil warms to +15°C and frost danger passes. Space plants 70–100 cm apart.
Melon loves heat and requires 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Soil should be fertile, with pH 6.0–7.0, well-drained. Optimal temperature is 20–28°C. Plant requires frequent watering, especially during flowering and fruit development.
Leave 2–3 strong shoots per plant, remove others. Thin fruit sets, leaving 2–3 fruits per vine. Place straw or cardboard under developing fruits for protection from soil and to prevent rot. Regularly remove damaged and deformed fruit sets.
A ripe melon is identified by: completely golden netted skin, sweet fragrant aroma, hollow sound when tapped, cracking of the peduncle when pressed. Ripens in 90–100 days from seedling transplanting.
During vegetative period (June–July) apply nitrogen fertilizers (urea, ammonium nitrate) once every 2 weeks. From flowering onwards, switch to phosphate-potassium fertilizers to increase fruit sweetness. Foliar feeding with trace elements (boron, zinc) during fruit set is beneficial.
