In the mid-latitude climate of the CIS, plant seedlings in April-May. Seeds can be sown in March for seedlings or directly in the ground in May when soil is sufficiently warm (above +15°C).
Young perilla leaves are used fresh or dried in Asian dishes, salads, and pickles. The plant has a spicy anise-clove aroma. Leaves are added to tea to improve digestion.
Perilla prefers full sun and becomes more decorative and aromatic with good lighting. In partial shade, it grows slower and leaves are less aromatic.
Water moderately, 1-2 times a week depending on weather. Soil should be slightly moist. In hot, dry summers, increase watering frequency. Overwatering can lead to disease.
On fertile soils, you can get by without fertilizers. On poor soils, fertilize once every 2-3 weeks with diluted manure or balanced NPK 10-10-10 fertilizer. Add organic matter at planting time.
