Remontant raspberries produce a harvest on the shoots of the current year. This allows you to get berries in the fall. It is also easier to prepare for winter - you can simply mow it at the root.
If you mow the entire above-ground part in the fall, then there is no need to cover it - the roots overwinter well under the snow. This makes it very frost-resistant.
