Frequently asked questions(4)
Garden strawberries are larger. What we call strawberries are botanically usually garden strawberries (Fragaria × ananassa). Real strawberries (Fragaria moschata) are smaller but more flavorful.
Strawberries are grown in one place for no more than 4 years. After this, diseases and pests accumulate, and yields drop.
The main reason is gray rot. It develops in damp weather, with thickened plantings and watering on the leaves. To avoid rot, mulch the soil with straw to keep the berries off the ground.
The root system freezes at -10...-12°C. Plants require snow cover (20–25 cm) or mulching/covering with spruce branches in snowless winters.
