Frequently asked questions(5)
Willows are planted in early spring (March-April) or in autumn (October-November) as the cold sets in. Spring planting is preferable, as it gives the plant time to root before summer.
Willow is a hydrophilic, extremely moisture-loving plant. The ideal spot is a waterside bank, a low-lying area or a site with a high water table. It will not grow well without moisture, but prolonged waterlogging at the roots is also harmful.
Prune in early spring (March) before sap flow begins. Remove broken, diseased and crossing branches. For weeping forms, do a shaping prune every year, removing up to 1/3 of the shoots. In summer only light pruning is acceptable.
The main enemies are willow scale, willow leaf beetle and aphids. If pests appear, spray with insecticides (e.g. pirimiphos-methyl or thiamethoxam products) in spring and early summer. Sanitary pruning and removal of damaged branches reduce the infestation risk.
White willow is frost-hardy down to -40°C (zones 2-8) and overwinters without problems in continental climates. Young trees should be mulched around the base with a 10 cm layer in their first year. Mature trees need no protection, though in snowy regions the flexible branches can suffer under the weight of snow.
